Boost Radio Launches on Ohio's Multiple Stations | Christian Hip Hop & Gospel Music (2025)

Is Christian Hip Hop about to explode in Ohio? River Radio Ministries is betting big on it, launching Gateway Creative Broadcasting’s “Boost Radio,” a Christian Hip Hop format, across a network of Ohio stations. This is a bold move, aiming to reach a younger generation with a sound they understand.

As of now, Boost Radio is broadcasting on 88.7 W204CU in Findlay, 88.9 WHEI in Tiffin, and 90.1 WJEE covering Bolivar/Canton. They're also reaching listeners via 104.9 WCVO-HD2 in the Gahana/Columbus area and 104.5 WQKT-HD2 in Wooster. But that's not all: come January 1st, 91.1 W216AH in Ashland will join the Boost Radio family, further expanding their reach. These stations, all owned by Soaring Eagle Productions, previously aired “Rise-FM”, another River Radio Ministries brand which began airing last November.

But here's where it gets controversial... Some might question whether Christian Hip Hop can truly resonate with its intended audience. Can it effectively blend faith-based messages with the raw energy and authenticity that hip hop fans expect?

According to Josh Hooper, Program Director at River Radio Ministries, these stations are strategically positioned to connect with the next wave of Christian music listeners, particularly those around vibrant college campuses. Hooper states that a primary goal for the next three years is to introduce fresh formats to Ohio, spreading the message of Jesus. He sees the partnership with Boost Radio, with its “Hip Hop Built Different” approach, as a key way to achieve this. In essence they hope to be more relevant to a younger generation than traditional Christian radio.

And this is the part most people miss... Gateway Creative Broadcasting Operations Manager Mike Couchman emphasizes the shared vision between Boost Radio and River Radio Ministries. Couchman says, “BOOST Radio is thrilled to officially partner with River Radio Ministries. Their heart to reach Ohio with the love of Jesus, and do it with excellence, syncs up perfectly with ours. We’re excited to see how God moves.” This highlights the importance of the partnership and the shared belief in the power of Christian Hip Hop to make a difference. Many may question whether a radio station can truly affect change, and it will be interesting to see the tangible results of this partnership.

What do you think? Is Christian Hip Hop a powerful tool for spreading faith, or does it risk diluting both the music and the message? Can radio be a relevant medium in today's digital age, especially for reaching young people? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
