Country Squares sold very poorly compared to Pop Tarts, and Post changed the product's name to Toast'em Pop Ups in 1965. In 1971, Post sold the rights to the name and product to the Schulze and Burch Biscuit Company, which still produces Toast'em Pop Ups today.

Cleveland, Ohio, hit the world with the orig Fab Four when we released our four original flavors: Strawberry, Blueberry, Brown Sugar Cinnamon & Apple-Currant. Since literally no one has ever seen a currant, we dropped that flavor.

At the time Kellogg's competitor, Post, was creating a toaster pastry called “Country Squares,” which was later named “Toast'em Pop Ups.” Executives from Kellogg's, which sold cereal, asked Post if his plant would have the capabilities to create a similar product.

Post called their product Country Squares. Kellogg's was second in the marketplace and called their product Pop-Tarts. “Truth be told, Kellogg's branding and their go-to-market approach was a little bit stronger and therefore that's why Pop-Tarts are still around today and Country Squares are not,” Dixon says.

Using similar technology to that from its pet-food division, Post was able to create a pastry filled with fruit that didn't need to be kept in a fridge and didn't ruin. On February 16, 1964, Post even unveiled its new product, Country Squares, to the adoring press and hugely impressed food industry.

“Pop-Tarts was able to reduce excess packaging and waste by doubling the number of toaster pastries in each packet. By the time Pop-Tarts became a household favorite, fans were already used to the double packages as part of the Pop-Tarts experience,” the brand stated in an email.
