What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

4-Unit Play Take Dallas -125 over Minnesota (8:30 p.m. EST, Tuesday May 28)
We wrote on our writeup for the Pacers last night that they had nothing to lose as they didn’t expect to be in this position and they were playing basically with house money. They played a strong game and good enough to cover the spread but not win. But we think the mindset in Minnesota is different as this team probably thought they were championship caliber and they are probably panicking. That is not going to allow them to play their best game. Dallas matches up well with the Wolves as has been evident with the results here. And this experienced Dallas team will be anxious to close this thing out and give themselves ample rest compared to Boston for their Finals matchup.

1-Unit Play. Take ‘Under’ 211.0 Minnesota at Dallas (8:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 28)
All three games in this series have gone ‘over’ and the total has now lurched upwards. The last game was the highest scoring one yet, with 223 total points and was the first game to really blow away the total. However, I don’t think that the Mavs are going to shoot 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range (14-for-28) again. Minnesota is too good defensively to continue to get walked through. Prior to this series the ‘under’ was 6-1 when these two teams got together and I think that both teams will dig in on that end here.

4-Unit Play. #507. Take Minnesota Timberwolves +1.5 over Dallas (Tuesday @ 8:30pm est)

Note, incredible 7-1 MLB Run after the 7* Winner on the Giants yesterday 8-4. Join us as we move to a 8-1 run today and join us for the entire season of Baseball. Minnesota makes sense here as they are down 0-3 and of course even with Luka we would have still rode with Minnesota and the Ant Man as well as Towns to show some pride here as he has been getting destroyed in the media. Remember, Ant man is just 22 years old and the expectations on him are insane considering that Jordan did not rise to prominence until much later in his playing days and faltered to the Pistons and Celtics for many years before securing the mantle. But, in this game, with the Timberwolves being so close the first 2 games and of course, letting it slip away in the last game, we think Minnesota puts for their best effort of the series here. Remember, the entire series could end and this season could go as a waste if they do not at least win this game here to take it back to Minnesota. This team is special in some ways and I think they come through here at least for this game.

The line is finally adjusted off 207 after 3 straight overs in the series. Now an elimination game where Minny is going to throw the kitchen sink at Dallas and Edwards will be dialed in after getting shown up in this series. Lively being out for Dallas takes away some rebounds and Minny will concentrate on second chance points. This series has averaged 217 ppg and I see more of the same as both teams will be hungry for a win. Also as close as these games have been a potential for OT is here as well.

Take Minnesota ATS as my top NBA pick for Tuesday night. Minnesota has held opponents to just 98.6 points per game against them over their last 5 games and obviously this is a must win game for them tonight. Minnesota has averaged 113.2 points per game on the road this season shooting 48.3% as a team. Dallas shot 55.9% against Minnesota in their last game so you can definitely expect Minnesota to step up defensively here tonight especially in the paint and focus on stopping Doncic. Minnesota has also shot 38.3% as a team from beyond the arc on the road this season. Play Minnesota ATS

4-Unit Play: Take 507 T-Wolves +1 (1st Half) over Mavs (8:30 p.m., Tues., May 28)
Minnesota has a strong first half Net Rating in these playoffs and before Game-3, they led Dallas outright in each of their three previous meetings, including the final regular season meeting and each of the first two playoff games. It’s now or never for the T-Wolves and I expect to see an extremely motivated team out of the blocks. I’m backing Minnesota in the first half on Tuesday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

3 Unit Play. Take #508 Dallas -125 ML over Minnesota (8:30 p.m. ET, Tuesday, May 28)
Despite Minnesota having their best shooting game at 50.6% in nine tries, it was not enough to win Game 3. The reason was that Dallas connected on 55.9%, their best mark of the playoffs. That is the problem with the Timberwolves, they can play with the Mavs, then at crunch time the shots stop falling and the defense breaks down and they fall just short. Dallas has two assassins in Luka and Kyrie and their court vision is so good they find weak side big men teammates cutting to the basket all alone five/six times a game in this series for deflating baskets for Minnesota. With the Mavericks at home and knowing how to beat the T-Wolves, look for Luka and company to move to 12-4 SU in the postseason.

Looking to fade this Minnesota team. The Timberwolves are struggling having dropped six of their last eight games including their first three in this series. Dallas is playing some excellent basketball in the playoffs as they have arguably the best series win to date by any team knocking off Oklahoma City last round. Cheap price on better team at home.
