The vast availability is not the only reason for the low prices. The transparency of these opals affects the cost as well. The less transparent the gem is, the higher the price will be. This is because opaque gemstones promote a beautiful and more vibrant play of colors that is loved worldwide.

Opal is a precious gemstone, like rubies, emeralds or diamonds. Opal is rare, and it is expensive to prospect and mine for. Dozens of miners can work for months, using expensive machinery and spending tens of thousands of dollars on fuel, and between them find only a single fine opal, or perhaps a few.

Current opal prices depend on the type of opal stone. The most valuable Opal, Black Opal, ranges from $50 per carat to $10,000 per carat. Alternatively, White Opal is relatively common and ranges from $10 per carat to $150. Other opal types, such as fire, red, and blue, fall in the $10 to $500 per carat range.

Opal has a chemical composition of SiO2. nH2O and is a mineraloid; unlike minerals, mineraloids have no ordered atomic structure. Opals are comprised of hydrated silica and typically contain 6-10% water.

Opals are made of silica SiO2 with up to 20% water (usually closer to 4-10%). They do not possess a crystalline structure; they are amorphous, with no directional optical properties. Opals form when a hot silica rich solution permeates veins and voids in the ground.

Since the opal is rough and it is dusty and dry you cannot see any color of the opal. So miners would stand in a group and each would lick their opal to expose the colour. Licking the Opal would reveal the true color of the opal and would respresent what the Opal would look like once it is cut and polished.

Opal is considered an October birthstone. Some people think it's unlucky for anyone born in another month to wear an opal.
